Correct pressure in the engine housing prevents oil leakage from the engine and ensures reliable lubrication. Unfortunately, the rubber flaps (which regulate the internal pressure) inside the oil filler neck harden over the years (or due to synthetic oils). The only solution is to replace the oil filler neck.

Oil Supply for the Citroën Mehari (2CV) Engine
The oil circuit of the Citroën 2CV ("Duck") is a simple but very robust pressure circulation lubrication system that is essential for the air-cooled two-cylinder boxer engine. The oil pump draws oil from the oil pan through the oil filter and oil cooler, supplying the crankshaft, main bearings, connecting rod bearings, and valve train before it flows back. Our product range includes all necessary replacement parts such as the oil pump, oil filter, oil cooler, oil pressure switch, oil filler neck, engine oil, and gaskets.
Checking the oil level
Please note that the oil level should be checked on a level surface while the engine is warm. It should be close to the maximum level to prevent overheating.
Which engine oil for the 2CV?
The 2CV’s engines are known for their robustness. However, due to the air-cooling system, it is essential to always use sufficient quantities of high-quality engine oil (20W50). Please use only mild-alloy classic car oils for the 2CV. We carry these in our product range: Item 20001 from the original supplier ELF / TOTAL and Item 20010 from Castrol.
Tips and Tricks on Oil Leaks in the 2CV4 and 2CV6
Many 2CV engines suffer somewhat from oil loss. Here’s what you should know:
- An oil leak at the front of the camshaft is relatively normal. The engine does not have an oil seal (seal) on the camshaft, but only a type of screw designed to fling the engine oil back through the rotational movement of the camshaft.
- In older engines, oil leaks occur at the pushrod seals beneath the cylinders. These seals harden over the years and are held in place only by spring force. Therefore, they should also be inspected and replaced if necessary.
- We offer the original pushrod seals from the original equipment manufacturer Glaser (our part number 10018 for the 2CV6) as well as improved pushrod seals made from enhanced material (part number 10481)!
- Of course, we also carry all other pushrod gaskets for older 2CV models. This includes all necessary mounting parts.
Is there anything else to keep in mind?
When replacing the clutch, the rear crankshaft seal should also be inspected!
However, one thing is often forgotten or overlooked:
The crankcase ventilation is located in the oil filler neck on the 2CV engine. The excess pressure generated by the 2CV engine is routed through the oil filler neck to the air filter (via a hose). The oil filler neck is double-walled and has small rubber flaps that open when a certain level of excess pressure is reached, releasing the pressure into the air filter!
Over the years, these rubber flaps swell and can no longer release the excess pressure to the air filter. Now the oil takes the easiest route, which is the front camshaft or other seals like the tappet tube seals.
At this point, resealing the entire engine is useless! After a few kilometers, everything will be leaking again! The only solution is to replace the oil filler neck! It’s often the culprit!
You’ll see, after that everything will be fine again and the 2CV will leak within the “normal” range.
P.S.: The oil filler neck cannot be repaired!

One final tip: Always buy brand-name oil filters (our item 10000). These are guaranteed to have an integrated oil pressure valve. This detail is often omitted in cheap, no-name oil filters. Your 2CV engine will thank you!
