Citroën 2CV Wheel Bearings: Dimensions, Interchangeability, and Replacement

The wheel bearings on the Citroën 2CV are considered very robust and durable. With normal use and proper installation, they often last for several decades or well over 150,000 kilometers.

Citroën 2CV Wheel Bearings: Interchangeability and Dimensions

For the standard sedan models, i.e., the 2CV4 and 2CV6, the front and rear wheel bearings are interchangeable.

The AK350 and AK400 vans, as well as the Acadiane, use larger bearings due to their higher payload capacity.

Replacing Citroën 2CV Wheel Bearings: Step by Step

The replacement process is similar in principle for the front and rear, but differs when removing the hub.

1. Preparation and Removal

  • Remove the wheel and securely jack up the vehicle.
  • Loosen the axle nut:
    • Front axle: Loosen the crown nut, removing the split pin first.
    • Rear axle: Remove the grease cap and loosen the 44 mm flanged nut. The nut’s countersink must be tapped back out beforehand, for example with a sheet metal chisel.
  • Remove the hub or drum:
    • Front: Press out the drive shaft.
    • Rear: Remove the brake drum with a puller (our item 20135).

2. Remove the old wheel bearing

  • Retaining ring or ring nut: The bearing is held in the housing by a large ring nut.
  • Remove the rivets: Carefully drill out the rivets securing the ring nut.
  • Use a special tool: Unscrew the ring nut using a suitable spline wrench. A combination tool (item 20236) is available in our product range that can be used to loosen both the wheel bearing spline nut and the 44-mm rear axle nut. A suitable 32-mm socket is also available for the crown nut on the drive shaft at the front axle.
  • Removal: Press out the old bearing and the shaft seal (Simmerring) using a mandrel or a press.

3. Install the new wheel bearing

  • Cleaning: Thoroughly clean the bearing seat and lightly grease it.
  • Pressing in: Position the new bearing straight and press it in. Important: Press only on the outer ring of the bearing; never press over the inner ring.
  • Install shaft seal: Insert a new shaft seal and lightly oil it beforehand.
  • Secure the ring nut: Tighten the ring nut and re-caulk it using a center punch.
  • Rear axle: Install the 44-mm nut and caulk it as well. Then install the grease cap.
  • Front axle: Insert the drive shaft and secure it with the 32-mm crown nut. Tightening torque: 350 Nm. Then insert the split pin.
