Citroën AZU, AK, AKS, and Acadiane: Differences in Engines, Pistons, Cylinders, Crankshafts, and Camshafts
This overview applies to the small Citroën A-series commercial vehicles AZU / AZU 250, AK / AKS 350/400, and Acadiane. The very early AU model with a 375 cm³ engine is not included.
Important: Commercial designations, model years, and engine variants do not always correspond exactly. To ensure accurate part identification, the engine plate on the engine block should therefore always be checked. Displacement alone is often insufficient for these vehicles.
Overview of the most important engine variants
| Vehicle / Model | Engine plate / Engine type | Displacement | Bore × Stroke | Technical feature |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AZU early 425-cc version | A53 / AZU | 425 cm³ | 66 × 62 mm | Early 425cc engine with varying compression ratios, power output, and tuning depending on the model |
| AZU late 425 cc version / AZU-A | A79/0 / AYA | 425 cm³ | 66 × 62 mm | Still 425 cm³, but a more powerful, later version |
| AZU 250 / AZU-B | A79/1 / AYA2 | 435 cc | 68.5 × 59 mm | 435cc engine with a larger bore but shorter stroke than the 425cc |
| AK 350 early 602-cc version | M4 / AM / AK | 602 cc | 74 × 70 mm | Early 602 engine, technically closer to the early Ami-6 engine generation |
| AKS / AK 400 | AK2 / M28/1 | 602 cc | 74 × 70 mm | Later 602 commercial vehicle version, robust and designed for everyday use |
| Acadiane | AM2A / M28 family | 602 cc | 74 × 70 mm | Custom Acadiane tuning, not simply identical to Dyane 6 or Ami 8 engines |
Correctly distinguishing between Citroën AZU, AK, AKS, and Acadiane pistons and cylinders
There are several piston and cylinder variants in the Citroën A commercial vehicle series. It is particularly important to distinguish between 425 cm³, 435 cm³, and 602 cm³.
425 cm³: A53 and A79/0
The 425-cm³ engines have a bore of 66 mm and a stroke of 62 mm. These engines were used in various power ratings. Therefore, early and late 425 models should not be treated as identical across the board.
Differences may exist, particularly in pistons, cylinders, compression, carburetor tuning, and camshafts. The engine plate is therefore crucial for selecting the correct replacement parts.
435 cm³: A79/1 / AYA2
The 435-cm³ engine has a bore of 68.5 mm, but a stroke of only 59 mm. It is therefore not simply a bored-out 425 engine.
This is an important point: Although the displacement is larger, the stroke is shorter. As a result, the crankshaft also differs from that of the 425-cc engine. The pistons/cylinders and crankshaft must therefore be compatible with the 435-cc version.
602 cm³: M4, M28, M28/1, and AM2A
The 602-cc engines generally have a 74 mm bore and a 70 mm stroke. Nevertheless, not all 602 engines are the same.
Early M4 engines, later M28/M28/1 engines, and the AM2A version of the Acadiane differ in details such as compression ratio, carburetor, camshaft, and tuning. For repairs, you should therefore not simply select parts based on “602 cm³.”
Citroën A-series commercial vehicles Camshaft: an often-overlooked difference
In the A models, the camshaft is a key component of the engine’s characteristics. It influences power, torque curve, smoothness, and the appropriate carburetor tuning.
Especially with the 425-cc engines, there were different power ratings over the course of their production. These differences arose not only from different carburetors or compression ratios, but also from modified camshaft tuning.
A distinction must also be made with the 602-cc engines. An AM2 engine from a Dyane or Ami 8 is not automatically identical to an AK2, M28/1, or AM2A engine. The Acadiane has its own tuning and is designed more for fuel economy and commercial vehicle use.
Citroën AZU, AK, and Acadiane Crankshaft: Stroke Is Key
The crankshaft should always be selected based on the stroke and engine configuration.
| Stroke | Compatible engines | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 62 mm | A53 and A79/0, 425 cm³ | Typical 425 crankshaft |
| 59 mm | A79/1, 435 cm³ | Special 435 cc crankshaft with shorter stroke |
| 70 mm | M4, M28, M28/1, AM2A, 602 cm³ | Base stroke of the 602-cc engines |
The difference between 425 cm³ and 435 cm³ is particularly important. Despite having a larger bore, the 435 engine has a shorter stroke. A 425 crankshaft therefore does not simply fit the 435 version.
Practical tips for selecting replacement parts
AZU 425
For an AZU with 425 cm³, you should first check whether an A53 or an A79/0 is installed. Both variants have 425 cm³, but differ depending on the production year and tuning.
AZU 250 / 435 cm³
For the 435-cc engine, 425-cc and 435-cc components must not be mixed. The key specifications are a 68.5 mm bore and a 59 mm stroke.
AK 350 with early 602-cc engine
For early AK 350 engines with M4 technology, you should carefully check which engine version is installed. These early 602 engines are not automatically equivalent to later 2CV6, AK400, or Acadiane engines.
AK400 / AK2 / M28/1
The AK400 typically features a robust 602-cc version with a 74-mm bore and 70-mm stroke. These engines are designed primarily for commercial vehicle use, durability, and economical operation.
Acadiane AM2A
Although the Acadiane also has a 602 cm³ displacement, it is not simply a Dyane 6 with a panel van body. The AM2A engine has its own specific tuning. To achieve the original characteristics, the compression ratio, camshaft, and carburetor tuning should match the Acadiane version.
Frequently Asked Questions About Citroën AZU, AK, AKS, and Acadiane Engines
Is a 435-cc engine just a bored-out 425?
No. While the 435-cc engine has a larger bore of 68.5 mm, it has a shorter stroke of 59 mm. As a result, the crankshaft also differs from that of the 425-cc engine.
Are all 602-cc engines the same?
No. Although the M4, M28, M28/1, AM2, and AM2A have the same base displacement, they can differ in compression ratio, camshaft, carburetor, air intake, and engine characteristics.
Can AM2 parts simply be installed in an Acadiane?
Not without careful inspection. The Acadiane AM2A engine has its own specific tuning. Converting it to AM2 characteristics may be technically possible, but it alters the original engine characteristics.
What information is most important when selecting replacement parts?
The most important specification is the engine plate on the engine block. Displacement and vehicle model alone are often insufficient for Citroën A-series models.
Why is the camshaft so important?
The camshaft influences power delivery, torque curve, and the appropriate carburetor tuning. Especially for 425-cc and 602-cc engines, there are different versions that are not interchangeable.
Quick Summary
For Citroën AZU, AK, AKS, and Acadiane models, engine identification should always be done carefully. The engine plate, bore, stroke, compression ratio, and camshaft tuning are particularly important.
A 425 is not automatically identical to every other 425, a 435 is not simply a bored-out 425, and a 602 engine can be tuned quite differently depending on the version. For a reliable repair and the right replacement parts, the exact engine identification should therefore always be checked.
