Correct pressure in the engine housing prevents oil leakage from the engine and ensures reliable lubrication. Unfortunately, the rubber flaps (which regulate the internal pressure) inside the oil filler neck harden over the years (or due to synthetic oils). The only solution is to replace the oil filler neck.

The oil circuit of the Citroën AMI is a simple yet very robust pressure circulation lubrication system that is essential for the air-cooled two-cylinder boxer engine. The oil pump draws oil from the oil pan through the oil filter and oil cooler and supplies the crankshaft, main bearings, connecting rod bearings, and valve train before it flows back. AMI engines are known for their robustness. However, due to the air-cooling system, it is essential to always use sufficient quantities of high-quality engine oil (20W50). Please use only mild-alloy classic car oils for the 2CV. We offer the following in our range:

However, one thing is often forgotten or overlooked:
The crankcase ventilation is located in the oil filler neck on the AMI with the M28 engine. The excess pressure generated by the M28 engine is routed through the oil filler neck to the air filter (via a hose). The oil filler neck is double-walled and has small rubber flaps that open when a certain level of excess pressure is reached, releasing the pressure into the air filter!
Over the years, these rubber flaps swell and can no longer release the excess pressure to the air filter. Now the oil takes the easiest route, which is then the front camshaft or other seals like the tappet tube seals.
At this point, resealing the entire engine is useless! After a few kilometers, everything will leak again! The only solution is to replace the oil filler neck! It is often the culprit!
You’ll see, after that everything will be fine again and the AMI will leak within the “normal” range.
P.S.: The oil filler neck cannot be repaired!

One final tip: Always buy brand-name oil filters (our item 10000). These are guaranteed to have an integrated oil pressure valve. This detail is often omitted in cheap, no-name oil filters. Your 2CV engine will thank you!
