Collar suspension pot - hinged tie bar. (Seal of the hinged tie bar to the Threadet pipe). Suitable

for all Citroen 2CV, AK, Dyane, AZU. (smaller + large suspension pot). This collar is from a improved rubber silicone mixture and has on the inside small splines, so that it cannot slip from the Threadet pipe. Or. No.: A434.286.

Ricipot lubricant for the suspension pot (400ml in spray can). Suitable for Citroen 2CV, Dyane

AMI, AK, AZU, Mehari... Ricipot lubricant is supplied with a suitable cavity probe, making it very easy to apply to the suspension pot. It is based on technical castor oil and manufactured according to Citroen specifications at the time of production. Ricipot prevents creaking and squeaking of the suspension pots and prevents the risk of internal rusting of the suspension pots.

Citroën Ami 6 Suspension and Shock Absorbers Compared to the 2CV and Dyane

Although the Citroën Ami 6 is technically closely related to the 2CV and the Dyane, its suspension system was tuned to be significantly more sophisticated and comfortable in order to meet the standards of a mid-size sedan.

Here are the key differences from the Dyane and the 2CV:

1. Inertia dampers on the Citroën Ami 6

In the Ami 6, the characteristic inertia dampers on the wheel hubs play a central role. While these were later replaced by purely hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers in the Dyane, the Ami 6 was perfectly tuned to the interplay of friction dampers and inertia dampers. This gives it the typical, extremely smooth “floating sensation” that is almost reminiscent of the DS’s hydropneumatic suspension.

2. Friction dampers as additional vibration dampers

The Ami 6 uses large-diameter friction dampers on the control arms. These can be mechanically adjusted to control the nose-dive behavior, i.e., the front end sinking during braking. The Dyane, on the other hand, relies almost exclusively on hydraulic dampers, which makes it feel stiffer and more modern compared to the Ami 6, but less smooth.

3. Modified spring characteristics on the Ami 6

Since the Ami 6 is significantly heavier than a standard 2CV, primarily due to its distinctive body and improved interior, the coil springs in the spring housings were designed to be longer and softer.

  • Ami 6: Maximum softness and long spring travel for high ride comfort.
  • Dyane: Slightly stiffer setup for more stable handling at the higher speeds of the 602-cc engine.

4. Track Width and Stabilization

The Ami 6 has a slightly different geometry of the control arms, which gives it more stable road holding. Although it still leans heavily in corners—typical of Citroën—it feels more planted on the road than the lighter Dyane.

What to look for with the Ami 6 suspension

On the Ami 6, maintenance of the friction dampers—the round discs on the swing arm axles—is particularly important. If these dry out or are incorrectly adjusted, the car will bounce nervously over transverse joints. Additionally, the rubber boots on the tie rods are often harder to access on the Ami 6 than on the Dyane.

Checking and adjusting the Citroën Ami 6 friction dampers

To check and adjust the friction dampers, also known as frotteurs, on the Ami 6, you need to look directly at the pivot points of the swing arms. Unlike modern shock absorbers, these sit directly on the axle.

1. Identifying the friction dampers

The friction dampers look like flat, round drums or large washers with a diameter of about 10 to 15 cm. They are located directly where the control arm is mounted on the chassis. Inside are friction linings, similar to brake pads, which are compressed by spring pressure.

2. Function test using the rock-and-roll test

This is the simplest method that requires no tools:

  • Press down firmly on one corner of the car—for example, on the fender or bumper—and release it abruptly.
  • Specification: The Ami 6 should rise, rock briefly past the zero point, and then immediately return to its resting position.
  • Fault symptom: If the car clearly oscillates two or three times, the friction linings are worn or the contact pressure is too low.

3. Adjust the friction dampers

If the car swings back too much, you can readjust the dampers. There is a large central screw in the middle of the damper drum.

  • Procedure: Tighten this screw in small increments, about a quarter turn at a time.
  • Important: This increases the pressure on the friction discs. Then perform the rocking test again.
  • Caution: Do not tighten the screw too much. If the damper locks up, the car loses its suspension comfort and the load on the control arm mount becomes too great.

4. Maintain and inspect the inertia dampers

Since the Ami 6 usually has both systems, you should also inspect the cylindrical pots on the wheel hubs:

  • Visual inspection: The dampers must be secure and must not rattle.
  • If there is significant shaking, they must not rattle inside.
  • It’s easier if you unscrew the vibration dampers. They are secured with only two screws. Then tilt the cartridge back and forth. You should hear the oil moving inside.
  • If you don’t hear any oil noise or if it rattles, the vibration damper has leaked and is defective.

Pro tip: If the friction dampers squeak or creak loudly when compressing, adding oil won’t help in the long run, as this would destroy the friction. In this case, the only solution is to disassemble and clean the pads. We carry the right replacement parts for the Citroën Ami 6 in our inventory.
